Valentine’s Day: Stay in with a takeaway?

Cosy rather than costly…

Valentine’s Day today will be less about wining and dining – and more about lounge wear, soft lighting, a good TV show and ordering in, according to new research of couples. 86 percent of home bird Britons plan to spend the evening of love in the comfort of their own home, rather than going out for a posh date.

And the perfect night in as a couple includes a bottle of wine (32 percent), a take-away (41 percent), a good TV series (12 percent) soft lighting (26 percent) and a snuggly sofa (22 percent) of those polled.

88 percent insist staying in is the new going out, with 29 percent insisting loungewear is the only thing they’ll be wearing up this Valentine’s. In fact, a resounding 56 percent of the couples who took part in the study insisted that passion and romance are overrated.

While as many as 12 percent intend to bring the romance by wearing their pyjamas. 92 percent agree that the concept of romance has changed from the old-fashioned notion of roses, chocolates and opening doors. While more than half (58 percent) think that people who have been together for years and still claim to be passionate are fibbing.

Kellie Wyles, Head of Upholstery from DFS:

“More and more couples are choosing to spend time in each other’s company at home on the sofa rather than going out. Creating a cosy and inviting space is key to making nights at home special all year round. In fact, as people plan their Valentine’s Day dates, they can even head to our website for advice on couple sofa etiquette and top tips on how to host a date night at home.”

This research of 2,000 Brits who have been in a relationship for longer than 10 years was commissioned by DFS and conducted by Perspectus Global during January 2025.
