On this Day 1970: Traditional home washing techniques

OTD, January 27th 1970…

Gwyn Richards met Emily Hadley of Tipton who still used a dolly stick and bucket to wash her clothes.

In this feature Emily is seen in her yard pounding clothes in a bucket with a dolly stick – which she calls the ‘old maid’ – Gwyn interviews her about her washing and the difference between hand washing and using a launderette. Emily then demonstrates her mangle and after encouragement from Richards sings a song.

ATV Today would return again to see Emily in 1978, this time a visit from John Swallow caught up with her cleaning rituals.
