Guy Martin looks for a ‘proper job’ with U&Dave

UKTV indulge in a little work experience…

Guy Martin has never wanted to work in HR or be an IT consultant… and he certainly isn’t interested in the kind of career where there’ll be blue sky brainstorms in the collaboration area. In a four-part series for U&Dave Guy tries his hand at different vocations.

“I’m not making TV programmes for the sake of making TV programmes. Definitely not. Because I’ve got a job, do you know what I mean? I don’t need to do it. We don’t have some rock and roll lifestyle to keep – well, saying that – I bought Shazza a ride-on lawnmower. That’s probably the only rock and roll thing I’ve ever done! I bought my missus a ride-on lawnmower! We’re not flash mate, so I don’t need to do it for the lifestyle, you know? We’re boring. Well not boring, I’m doing interesting stuff all the time, but we’re not flash.”Guy Martin on whether working for UKTV is a ‘proper job’

In the first episode, which airs next week, cameras follow Guy as he embarks on one of the most intense experiences of his life as he takes on what is often called the most dangerous job in the UK – working as a deckhand on a fishing trawler. Not a single trawler still works out of Guy’s hometown of Grimsby, one of the country’s biggest fishing ports when Guy was growing up. So, Guy has to travel to another famous trawler town, Brixham, in Devon. Here he sets sail for a gruelling 4-day trip on a 30-foot beam trawler called William of Ladram.

Other episodes in the series see Guy join Wildlife Wardens as they carry out their conservation work, trying his hand at birdwatching, rat catching and cleaning up a beach that’s a favourite with pregnant seals all on a remote island in the Irish Sea, just off the coast of the Isle of Man. He also follows in the footsteps of his brother and sister, both of whom were firefighters when he joins Peak’s Lane Fire Station in Grimsby – the town’s busiest station – to work a full 24-hour shift on Green Watch.

Finally, he joins a Search and Rescue team as a Dog Handler in the Highlands of Scotland. It’s cold, wet and blowing a gale – but of course it involves a dog, so Guy is loving it.

Guy Martin:

“I’ve just always been fascinated by people who are masters of their trade, especially when they’re right into it, so it’s an honour to work alongside some right interesting folk and find out a bit more about how and why they do it. There’s a load of jobs I’ve always wanted to have a go at and if an opportunity comes to get stuck in and learn from proper experts and grafters, then sign me up.”

Guy Martin: Proper Jobs starts on U&Dave, Sunday 26th January, all episodes on demand on U there after
