On this Day 1966: Behind the scenes at Thunderbirds

OTD, January 13th 1966…

An extended feature report on the making of the television puppet series, commissioned by ATV for ITV, Thunderbirds. Cameras go behind the scenes at the A.P. film studio in Slough.

David Lloyd provides a commentary on proceedings while Lionel Hampden interviews Sylvia Anderson about the characters in the puppet series.

Hampden also speaks to Derek Meddings about the special effects and filming techniques and Thunderbirds creator Gerry Anderson discusses the appeal of the series for adults and his hopes to move into live action film making.

The report also features models being constructed – including shots of puppet designer John Brown – costumes for the series being put together and sound dubbing sequences carried out using the Supermarionation system.
