On this Day 1979: Computerised public payphones
OTD, December 10th, 1979…
John McLeod reported on the introduction of two GPO computerised telephones in kiosks at Birmingham’s New Street Station. John gives a demonstration of how the payphone would work using the new press button dialling system and digital display.
The payment system and return of coins was also different which McLeod also demonstrates after he calls into ATV Centre in Birmingham to check the phone works.
