On this Day 1972: Chris Tarrant and Four Ferrets

Chris Tarrant met Nicky Roberts who was planning to walk from Evesham to Worcester with four ferrets down his trousers to raise money for charity.

Tarrant talks to Nicky Roberts during one of his training walks in which he appears to be in some discomfort due to his use of ‘working ferrets’. The stunt originated at the Gardeners Arms in Evesham.

Local press of the time reported that Norman Staite successfully carried a sack of coal twelve and a half miles from Spetchley to Evesham. Meanwhile, landlord Tony Massingham transported grain, and Nicky Roberts covered two miles accompanied by his ferrets. Unfortunately, one of the ferrets bit into his leg. He was wearing trousers borrowed from the twenty-stone Mr. Massingham, which were too large for him.
