Tito Jackson dies aged 70

Tito Jackson, older brother of Michael Jackson and a founding member of The Jackson 5, has passed away at the age of 70.

The news was announced by his children in an Instagram post.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce that our beloved father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson is no longer with us.

“We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken.

“Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being.

“Some of you may know him as Tito Jackson from the legendary Jackson 5, some may know him as ‘Coach Tito’ or some know him as ‘Poppa T’.

“Nevertheless, he will be missed tremendously. It will forever be “Tito Time” for us. Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is ‘Love One Another.’ We love you Pops.

“Your boys, Taj, Taryll and TJ.”

As the guitarist for the iconic group formed in 1964, Tito played a significant role in their success.

The original line-up included Tito (born Toranio), Jackie, and Jermaine, who were later joined by Marlon and Michael, all under the management of their father, Joe Jackson.

The group participated in various talent contests, and their big break came at the Apollo Theatre in New York, where they secured a recording contract with Motown Records in 1969.

The Jackson 5 made history as the first American group to have their first four singles debut at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their chart-topping hits included I Want You Back, ABC, Blame It On The Boogie, and I’ll Be There.

Tito Jackson is survived by three children – Taj, 41, Taryll, 39, and TJ, 46, who were in the band 3T. He also has nine grandchildren.
