International Cat Day highlights the unique bond between humans and cats…
The day, this year on August 8th, also promotes the welfare and protection of these beloved animals. Cat enthusiasts and pet owners raise awareness about the needs of cats, share knowledge on how to care for them, and celebrate the joy and companionship they bring into their lives.
“Whether you adopt a cat in need, support local shelters, or simply spend extra time with your own pets, International Cat Day is the perfect opportunity to show appreciation for these elegant, independent, and lovable creatures” says Simon Bennett, Managing Director at petGuard.
International Cat Day falls onto Thursday 8th of August this year. To celebrate this day, leading pet insurer petGuard shares tips for cat owners to ensure their feline companions are thriving:
Cat-friendly home
The first step to ensuring a happy cat is to help it embrace its wild nature within the home. Making a home cat-friendly means accommodating a cat’s natural instincts to climb, perch, scratch, and truly own its territory. Just as humans adapt their homes to suit their preferences and create a sense of belonging, cats also require spaces adjusted to their needs to feel at home. This can involve creating a safe space for the cat to hide or simply clearing a window of pots and ornaments so the cat can access it and observe the surroundings.
Simple acts like these can go a long way in solving various behavioural problems. Pet stores offer a variety of climbing frames for cats that will rarely go unused.
The right nutrition is key
Appropriate nutrition is crucial for a cat’s health and can offer significant long-term benefits, potentially preventing serious, painful, and costly illnesses. Vets are emphasising the importance of feeding cats canned food rather than dry food. Dry food contains little water, is high in carbohydrates, and has a higher proportion of plant-based proteins compared to animal-based proteins. In addition, the high-temperature processing destroys essential nutrients. These factors directly affect a cat’s weight, bodily functions, and behaviour.
Cats seek attention
Domesticated cats seek human attention. Research shows that almost one in four cats and kittens form bonds with their owners, meaning they develop attachments to specific humans rather than people in general. Regularly setting aside time to cuddle, pet, and play with them can significantly enhance their overall well-being.
Cats are wonderful creatures, they are kind and affectionate, yet independent. “Having a feline companion is a reciprocal relationship, when you ensure their comfort and happiness, they will reward you with affection and devotion” adds Bennett.
