Jennie Bond says Huw Edwards should hand back his salary

The former BBC News anchor has given her views on the situation…

Jennie Bond, former BBC newsreader and royal correspondent, took part in a debate on The Jeremy Vine Show yesterday (August 1st) that posed the question Huw Edwards: Have you lost trust in the BBC?

Jennie Bond speaking to Jeremy Vine – who also still works for the BBC on Radio 2 – said:

“Well, frankly, I think if Huw has any dignity left, then he would hand some of the money back, certainly the 200 grand he has made since his since his arrest. So, I think it’ll be gracious of him to do that. I don’t think there’s any legal recourse for the BBC. And I think also we need to remember that you know, the BBC as a whole is being tarnished and, you know, reputationally, this is very, very damaging, of course.

“But I think you and I both know, Jeremy, that the newsroom, the news division, is quite rightly, and thankfully quite separate from the Corporation itself. I know it’s quite a hard division for people to make, but we in the news without fear or favour question the bosses at the BBC and that’s entirely right. So, in the newsroom themselves, they were kept in the dark right until this week, which is extraordinary. But I think that it remember that.”

Jeremy Vine added to the conversation, ‘Yeah, it is. It’s very odd. It’s all very well having a separation. But if one bit of the BBC hears something newsworthy, you think they should probably communicate it to the news bit. But as you say, they’re completely separate.’

The Jeremy Vine Show airs Monday-Friday from 9am on Channel 5
