Coronation Street lines up reunion for Martin and Gail

Coronation Street’s Gail Rodwell is set to reunite with her ex-husband Martin Platt before bidding farewell to the cobbles, a tabloid has reported.

According to The Sun, actor Sean Wilson will be making a comeback as Martin, a role he portrayed from 1985-2005 and briefly returned to in 2018.

The article mentions that Gail will be ‘sailing off into the sunset’ alongside her former spouse, following actress Helen Worth’s decision to depart the show after five decades.

Gail and Martin were together between 1989-2000, during which time they welcomed their son David in 1990. Despite breaking up due to Martin’s infidelity, it was the most successful of Gail’s six marriages.

A source told The Sun:

“A number of options were considered for Gail’s departure from the cobbles but bosses knew the moment needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie’s most iconic characters as well as honour Helen’s astonishing run on the soap.

“It just didn’t sit right to kill her off or have Gail suffer more tragedy after, let’s face it, a pretty traumatic life.

“Martin was always considered the one that got away and bosses are thrilled they’ve been able to tempt Sean back to wave Gail goodbye.”

Earlier this month, ITV announced that Helen Worth will leave her role as Gail after fifty years, shocking many fans of ‘The Street’.

Helen first appeared on the cobbles on July 29, 1974, and is the second longest-serving continuous cast member after Bill Roache, who has played Ken since the show’s first episode on December 9, 1960. The actress has also accrued the second-highest number of appearances in the soap, with 4,579 compared to Bill’s 4,841.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV1 and STV.
