Doctor Who 2024 finale heads to the big screen

Showcase Cinemas will put the BBC science fiction classic on the silver screen when the latest series reaches its final edition.

The cinema chain will host the Doctor Who season finale, The Legend of Ruby Sunday & Empire of Death, which will be screened at cinemas nationwide on June 21st.

The two-part close to the series – the first featuring Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor – will begin screening at 11 pm, with showrunner Russel T Davies stating the finale is set to be one of the scariest and most shocking episodes yet. With decades of planning behind it, this is a culmination of storytelling unlike anything seen before in Doctor Who history. The episodes also star Millie Gibson as Timelord sidekick Ruby Sunday.

Best known for her role as Coronation Street’s Kelly Neelan Millie joined the time and space drama in 2023’s festive offering. Speaking of her role at the time of joining the Beeb Millie Gibson said:

“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

It was May last year that the BBC confirmed Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th timelord. Ncuti, prior to taking on The Doctor, was best known for his critically acclaimed performance in Sex Education as Eric Effiong. Showrunner Russell T Davies said of Ncuti that he was ‘bright and bold and brilliant’.

New Who: Ncuti Gatwa and Kelly Neelan Millie

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my utmost to do the same.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team has been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”Ncuti Gatwa speaking in May 2023

This most recent series is a new venture between the BBC and Disney Branded Television. The two have joined forces to make Disney+ the new global home, outside of the UK and Ireland, for all current and forthcoming episodes of Doctor Who.
