BBC One has announced that Gavin & Stacey, the hit sitcom created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, will be making a comeback this Christmas.
The show originally aired from 2007 to 2010, and had a one-off Christmas special in 2019.
Earlier this year, there were rumours of another special, and now it has been confirmed by the BBC. This upcoming episode will serve as the “last ever episode” of the series.
Writing on Instagram, Corden said:
“It’s official! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James”.
Gavin & Stacey follows the relationship between the two eponymous characters played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, who are both from different parts of the UK; Essex in England and Barry in Wales.
The show started with the outset of their relationship as they got to know each other over the phone before meeting up for the first time. It then followed the key moments in their relationship and the merging of their quirky families.
The series secondarily explored the less than straight-forward relationship between the couple’s friends, Smithy (Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) who had a baby together.
The previous special left viewers on the edge of their seats with a cliffhanger ending as Nessa confessed her love for Smithy, surprising him with a proposal on one knee. With 18.4m viewers, it was the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade and the most-watched comedy in 17 years.
