BBC commissions third series of The Traitors

The BBC has commissioned a third series of The Traitors.

Claudia Winkleman hosts as a group of strangers plays the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust to win up to £120,000.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC, said:

“The massive unscripted hit The Traitors will be back for a third series. Expect to see more psychological gameplay, exciting challenges and of course Claudia at the helm. It will be a thrilling ride for both avid fans and newcomers to the series for sure. The BBC will always remain faithful to The Traitors.”

The first series, which aired November-December last year, grew its audience throughout its run, ending on a high of 3.3 million viewers. The show also scooped a host of awards including the BAFTA TV Award for Best Reality & Constructed Factual, the NTA for Reality Competition, the RTS award for Entertainment and the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Entertainment Programme.

Set in a castle in the Scottish Highlands, the series saw 22 people take part in a variety of challenges to add to a prize pot. But there was a twist, as three of them were ‘traitors’ who were secretly trying to win all the money for themselves by offing the ‘faithful’ contestants.

The show is produced by Studio Lambert Scotland for the Beeb.

Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, said:

“We’re delighted a third series of The Traitors has been confirmed today ahead of the second series’ arrival on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The Traitors has been so warmly received by viewers, critics and award juries alike. Claudia and the team look forward to keeping audiences on the edge of their seats again with ever more thrilling missions and exceptional players competing in this gripping game of bluff and skill.”

Despite the BBC’s commitment to the UK version, commissioning a third series before the second has aired, The Traitors has already been axed in Australia after only two seasons.

The news was announced last week with Network 10 confirming there wouldn’t be a series in 2024. However, the broadcaster added that the show, hosted by Rodger Corser, could return in the future.
