Further casting announced for ITV drama Ruth

ITV has announced further casting for the forthcoming drama, Ruth.

The four-part drama series tells the story of Britain’s last woman to hang, Ruth Ellis. The former nightclub hostess was hanged at Holloway Prison at the age of 28 after being found guilty of killing her boyfriend, David Blakley.

As previously announced, Lucy Boynton will play the title role in writer Kelly Jones’ dramatisation of the events for ITV.

The casting update notes that Laurie Davidson will take on the role of Ruth’s abusive lover and victim, Blakely.

Toby Jones will play her solicitor, John Bickford, who gradually realises the extent of her abuse at the hands of Blakely – and who takes on the fight to make the case for provocation.

Mark Stanley will play Desmond Cussen, Ruth’s devoted admirer and sometime lover, a regular at the Little Club who becomes caught up in Ruth’s toxic love triangle alongside Blakely.

Other key roles include: Joe Armstrong as the detective in charge of Ruth’s case, DCI Davies; Arthur Darvill as Victor Mishcon, Ruth’s charismatic divorce lawyer who took up the fight for her reprieve; Juliet Stevenson as Dr Charity Taylor, Governess of Holloway Prison, and Toby Stephens as Ruth’s defence barrister, Melford Stevenson QC.

Set in 1955, Ruth is based on Carol Ann Lee’s acclaimed biography A Fine Day for Hanging: The Real Ruth Ellis Story. The drama is written by Kelly Jones and will be produced by ITV studios’ Silverprint Pictures.
