BBC were ‘already investigating’ Huw Edwards before newspaper expose

Newsnight was ‘working’ on a report about Edwards reports suggest following the programme providing details on BBC staff’s claims.

The BBC have confirmed that corporation staff were working through alleged allegations towards Huw Edwards by other Beeb staff before The Sun revealed the concerns of parents of a young man they claim Huw had had inappropriate, but not illegal, online relations.

GB News report that ‘sources at the BBC claim presenter Victoria Derbyshire was investigating accusations about Edwards’ conduct’ for a Newsnight expose feature ‘in the days before The Sun made its claims.’

BBC Two’s Newsnight revealed on Wednesday, just hours after Edwards’ wife released a statement naming Huw as the BBC presenter behind the headlines, that there had been allegations from three people, two still who work for the Beeb and one ex-BBC employee of inappropriate behaviour by Edwards towards them.

Deadline note that Edwards allegedly sent “inappropriate” and “suggestive” messages to junior BBC employees, including making comments about their appearance. Insiders at the corporation told Deadline ‘it was highly unusual for one news presenter to proactively look into a fellow BBC News presenter’ branding the situation ‘surreal’.

Edwards is currently in hospital for his mental wellbeing. The BBC note their investigation on Edwards and the claims against him are on going while the Met Police have stated there is no legal action to be taken with the original claims made by the parents in The Sun.
