OTD 1967: Stirling Moss opens BP ‘self service’ petrol station

On this Day, June 6th 1967…

ATV Midland News brought footage of the grand opening of the new BP ‘Self Service’ Petrol Station at the E. Everton and Sons operated site on Long Lane, Halesowen. Prior to ‘self-service’, which is the norm these days, operators would fill cars with petrol for customers.

To mark the grand opening at the BP Garage former racing driver Stirling Moss using a coin-operated self-service petrol pump.

Stirling Moss was a British Formula One driver, and an inductee into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Moss won 212 of the 529 races he entered across several different motorsports competitions from 1948 to 1962. Between 1955 and 1961 Moss finished in second place four times and in third place three times.

Stirling Moss was born on the 17th of September 1929 and died on April 12th 2020.
