MPs to probe ITV over Phillip Schofield affair

MPs are set to question ITV about the Phillip Schofield controversy.

Schofield resigned from ITV on Friday (26th May) and was dropped by his talent agency YMU after admitting that he had an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a young male runner from This Morning.

Due to the fact that the young runner was his junior on the daytime show, his behaviour has been criticised as an ‘abuse of power’.

While the fallen presenter claims that he lied to keep the long-rumoured affair hidden, questions still remain around the extent of ITV’s knowledge of it and its handling of an investigation that took place in early 2020.

ITV has said it looked into rumours of the affair at that time and “did not find any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour”.

iNews reports that the channel’s bosses, including chief executive Carolyn McCall, are expected to sit before the Commons Culture, Media and Sports Committee on Tuesday 5th June.

SNP MP John Nicolson, a member of the DCMS committee, said:

“The issues that have erupted around ITV of late have of course been a cause for concern, and I look forward to seeking clarity from ITV representatives.”

The news comes after former This Morning host Eamonn Holmes accused ITV of a “total cover up” of Schofield’s behaviour.

“It’s a total cover-up. Those in authority had to know. They had to know what was going on and they thought they would dodge the bullet which they did and they do constantly,” Holmes told GB News.
