The two-part documentary concludes tonight with the story of the prince that paid off his accuser.
In 2019, Prince Andrew was a largely forgotten figure in British public life. But everything changed in July of that year with the arrest and subsequent death of his former friend, convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
With the eyes of the world’s media now on Prince Andrew, the concluding episode of Andrew: The Problem Prince tells the story of his remarkable decision to put himself in front of the cameras for an interrogation by Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis – and the huge consequences of that decision for him and the British monarchy.
Featuring exclusive insight from Emily Maitlis and BBC producer Sam McAlister, the film gets inside the final negotiations to secure the now-infamous interview. Media lawyer and Andrew’s friend Paul Tweed tells how he advised Andrew against doing the interview – but was ignored.
Maitlis and McAlister talk through their experiences during the interview in Buckingham Palace, and the episode explores the massive fallout for Prince Andrew and the monarchy following its broadcast.
Andrew won’t be sweating over this programme, as apparently, he can’t…
The first episode, available on Channel 4’s streaming service which aired last week begins looking at how in the 1980s, Prince Andrew was a Falklands war hero. Andrew was a national heartthrob, ‘Randy Andy’ an affectionate nickname. These were Andrew’s glory years and his popularity peaked with his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. But following his departure from the Navy, Andrew’s image took a turn. Simon Wilson, former deputy ambassador to Bahrain, describes his experiences working with Andrew in his new role as a trade envoy and how unsuccessful Andrew was at promoting British trade. Andrew’s life became complicated further by his need to fund a lavish lifestyle and a friendship with Jeffery Epstein – the relationship that eventually prompted his disastrous Newsnight interview.
