OTD 1971: Intrusive road bridge

On this Day, March 15th 1971…

ATV Today reporter Sue Jay headed to Dordon in Warwickshire where a footbridge had been built over the A5 road only eight inches from a house.

Sue interviewed Mrs Emma Shilton about the close proximity of the new bridge to her house at 1, New Street. Sue talks to Mrs Shilton through her window to illustrate how the bridge now blocks her view. The resident says she will fight the position of the bridge with the council and they can either move the bridge or she can be rehoused somewhere else.

The bridge as of today – 52 years later – is still standing in exactly the same place – however, Mrs Shilton had some success – the steps down next to her house were moved not long after the ATV Today report nearer the road leaving a much wider gap between the bridge railings – which she had complained made her feel like she was in prison – and her sitting room window.
