BBC commissions second series of The Traitors

The BBC has confirmed that The Traitors will be returning for a second series.

Claudia Winkleman hosts as 22 strangers play the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust to win up to £120,000.

The show is billed as a ‘nail-biting psychological reality competition’.

Host Claudia Winkleman, said of the recommission:

“I can’t wait to go back to the castle to watch people play the greatest game on television. I’m knitting a high funnel sweater immediately.”

As a result of word of mouth, the first series, which aired November-December last year, grew its audience throughout its run, ending on a high of 3.3 million viewers. (This figure increased after 7 days and has continued to rise via iPlayer).

Twenty-two people travelled to a castle in the Scottish Highlands to complete a variety of challenges to raise funds for a cash prize. But there was a twist, as three of them were ‘traitors’ who were secretly trying to win all the money for themselves by offing the ‘faithful’ contestants.

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC, said:

“Last year’s ambitious and bingeable hit The Traitors with Claudia Winkleman is coming back with the brilliant team at Studio Lambert set to bring viewers another magnificent series full of drama and suspense. We can certainly expect even more deceit and psychological games for the Traitors and Faithfuls.”

The Traitors (12 x 60) is produced by Studio Lambert Scotland for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, said:

“We were delighted so many viewers of BBC One and BBC iPlayer loved the first season. They told us they enjoyed the drama and entertainment of watching our players judge each other, often leaping to false conclusions, but also forming alliances and real friendships. We’re excited to be making a second season with Claudia as together we build on the success of the first.”

The original (Dutch) version was created by Marc Pos, developed by All3Media’s IDTV & RTL Creative Unit and produced by IDTV.
