BAFTA support new talent with EE campaign and award

Last night, the winner of EE Mini Movie Makers, 6-year-old Elodie from Bournemouth, joined TV presenter Frankie Bridge on the Red Carpet of the EE BAFTA Film Awards at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall to meet the stars as they arrived at the Ceremony.

Pete Jeavons, Marketing Communications Director at EE:

“We have a long heritage in supporting emerging talent in the film industry with the EE Rising Star Award, so this year we wanted to create a campaign which inspires the next generation of rising stars on the first steps in their film making journeys. We were so impressed by the innovative ways in which young film fans from all over the country used the AR film sets; it was brilliant to see the ways in which technology can be used to spark young imaginations.”

Elodie was joined by her family, and the three runners-up from the EE Mini Movie Makers competition; a campaign designed to inspire the next generation of performers and filmmakers. Elodie had the chance to quiz some of her favourite actors including The Banshees of Inisherin cast, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and BAFTA Supporting Actress winner, Kerry Condon. Frankie and Elodie were also joined by Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, stars of the multi-award winning All Quiet on the Western Front, not to mention the EE Rising Star Winner, Emma Mackey who was presented the award by last year’s winner Lashana Lynch. EE Rising Star Nominees Naomi Ackie, Sheila Atim and Daryl McCormack, as well as actors Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ariana DeBose also stopped by to speak to the families.

Families from all over the UK submitted their Mini Movies shot at home using the four enchanting AR film sets which transformed their living rooms into the worlds of superheroes, dinosaurs, shooting stars and unicorns. The talented Elodie used EE’s Fantasy AR Film Set to create her winning entry, which transported her to a world of unicorns, fairies, and magical wildlife as she goes on her imaginary hunt.

A panel of experts, including BAFTA’s Head of Children & Young People’s Programme, Lisa Prime, BAFTA nominated producer, Hester Ruoff (Boiling Point), art director, actor Glen Wallace (Marcella, Jamie Johnson), Kat Law (Breathe) and EE’s Head of Film, Music and Games Partnerships, Magda Lojszczyk, selected the one winner and three runners-up to join EE’s red carpet host Frankie Bridge and meet the stars as they arrived at the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2023.

EE revealed Emma Mackey as the winner of the EE Rising Star Award for 2023, the only award presented at the EE BAFTA Film Awards that is determined by a public vote. Now in its eighteenth year, the accolade has continued to shine a spotlight on emerging acting talent, who have captured the imagination of the British public and the film industry alike over the past year.

Emma Mackey is one of five incredible actors nominated in recognition of their work and identified as a standout star of tomorrow. The other nominees are: Naomi Ackie, Sheila Atim, Aimee Lou Wood and Daryl McCormack.

Mackey is a BAFTA nominated French / British actor with multiple film and television projects in development. Next, Emma features in Barbie opposite Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, scheduled for worldwide release in July. Currently, audiences in the UK can see Emma as the titular character in Emily, a film re-imagining the life of Emily Brontë. Emily had its World Premiere when it opened the Platform Competition at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and will release in the US this spring.

Emma is perhaps best known for her BAFTA-nominated leading role as ‘Maeve Wiley’ in the television series, Sex Education alongside Ncuti Gatwa and Aimee Lou Wood. Last year Emma starred in her first French language role, that of ‘Adrienne Bourgès’ in the César nominated Eiffel, and also appeared as ‘Jacqueline de Bellefort’ in Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, starring Gal Gadot, Tom Bateman and Ali Fazal.

Emma Mackey, 2023 EERSA Winner:

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me! It’s such an honour to receive this award. Some seriously impressive actors have taken home the BAFTA mask in previous years and it’s a really special feeling to be amongst such an esteemed company. A massive thank you to both EE and BAFTA, I am very proud to be this year’s EE Rising Star.”

EE has been the lead partner of the BAFTA Film Awards for 26 years, the UK’s longest-standing arts charity partnership. Since the partnership began, EE has not only worked with BAFTA to introduce the EE Rising Star Award but also used its award-winning network and technology to help film fans access the EE BAFTA Film Awards with exciting experiences and content.

The gong show has come in for criticism for its lack of ‘respect’ in the memorandum section that omitted prolific film actors Bernard Cribbins and Leslie Phillips who both died in 2022.
