Wiggins rides in ratings glory with Sports Personality of the Year

Over fourteen million viewers turned into BBC One on Sunday evening to see cyclist Bradley Wiggins bestowed the gong of BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The 14.5 million viewing serge took place in the final few minutes of the programme with the BBC stating that they are the highest ratings for the programme for twenty years. The average ratings for the three-hour show, which annually celebrates the nations sporting heroes, was just over ten million.

It appears Britain is still basking in the afterglow of the London Olympics with ratings for the 2013 programme, broadcast from the Excel Centre in east London, more than double those of the 2012 edition which reached an average of 4.2 million.

In this years ceremony, which overran by nearly half an hour, Bradley Wiggins was given the top award after winning a gold in the Olympic Games as well as being the first Briton to win the Tour de France.

In second place was Jessica Ennis and Andy Murray took third.
