A couple with a 40-year-age gap appeared on This Morning and revealed they’re still very much in love, 17 years after getting married.
Edna Martin, 87, and Simon Martin, 47 met at a music concert when Edna was 68 and Simon was 28.
Talking to Ruth Langsford and Rylan Clark on the show today, Edna – who has appeared on the daytime show alongside Simon numerous times in the past – spoke about people believing they wouldn’t stand the test of time when they first got together.
She said, “At the time, I believe the British average was 28 months, so if you counter that against 17 years, we’re doing pretty damn good. I think we’ve overtaken! I knew and I think Simon will tell you, we both knew that this was ‘The One’.”
She added, “People think they fall in love in life lots of times and it’s happened to most people, or it will do, but there is someone out there who is your absolute destiny. You don’t have to look for them. Like with Simon and myself, we actually fell over each other in a doorway in a dressing room. I wasn’t looking because I’d been here a long time and I’ve been married before and I’ve had other relationships, but never like this”.
Simon explained, “Once we’d met, we knew there was something there, so we decided we were going to explore that’d see how it went. Ed suggested that I come over to Weston (from Birmingham) and we spent two weeks together. ‘Do we have a relationship?’ and of course at the end of that, we did.”
Edna then added, “I warned him and said if you come to us in Weston for a fortnight, it’s the West Country. We’re very warm and we’re very demonstrative, you can’t escape my darling – and he hasn’t!”
Speaking about what he loves about Edna, Simon revealed, “Everybody’s unique, but to me, Edna’s probably one of the most unique people I’ve ever met. She’s very witty, very kind, a very loving person, very straight up and down – what you see is what you get with Ed. She’s a very wonderful person and she’s the one for me!”
