UKTV’s factual entertainment channel W has commissioned a brand new UKTV original series, Emergency Department: First Time Medics.
The ten-part series will be an insightful and honest look at the drama of A&E through the perspective of junior doctors. Produced by Brown Bob Productions, Emergency Department: First Time Medicsfollows newly qualified doctors getting their first taste of emergency medicine, with filming taking place from the start of August until mid-September.
W’s channel director, Adam Collings:
“We are delighted to bring Emergency Department: First Time Medics to W viewers as the series really encapsulates the values that matter to them most. The series will provide an authentic and unfiltered look at the everyday heroes working in one of the most challenging parts of the NHS with a warmth and humour that W viewers now know to expect from our original content.”
Based at The Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, the series will focus on newly qualified doctors, known as Senior House Officers (SHOs), as they are thrown into the deep end at the start of their year-long placement on the NHS frontline. Each episode will follow two or three real-time shifts, giving audiences a real insight into the doctors’ relationships with their patients, and a deeper understanding of how it feels to be at the sharp end of this incredibly demanding job.
Emergency Department: First Time Medics is commissioned for UKTV by Emile Nawagamuwa, commissioning executive, with Hilary Rosen, deputy director of commissioning and head of factual and factual entertainment, and ordered by Adam Collings, channel director for W. Richard Watsham is director of commissioning and Steve North is genre general manager, comedy and entertainment. Executive producer for Brown Bob Productions is Rob Dersley. Brown Bob is the production company behind Inside the Ambulance, the longest-running and hugely popular UKTV Original series on W, as well as Secrets of the London Underground, The Architecture the Railways Built, Inside the Operating Theatre and Inside the Vets.
Emile Nawagamuwa, UKTV commissioning executive:
“It is a real privilege to be able to share the experiences of this team of junior doctors as they start their journey in the Emergency Department. As patients we often take their skills for granted but it’s incredibly important to show how challenging it is to become experts in their field. The Brown Bob team will bring heart and soul to this series and give viewers the chance to meet some of the extraordinary young people who have taken on the responsibility of dealing with the nation’s emergencies every day.”
Emergency Department: First Time Medics will air on UKTV’s free-to-air channel W joining a slate of new original programming recently announced including Wedding Valley, Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over USA, The Beauty Rewind Clinic and Emma Willis: Delivering Babies. Emergency Department: First Time Medics will also be available on UKTV Play.
