The couple appeared on ITV earlier today…
Actor Amanda Abbington and her fiance, escapologist and stuntman Jonathan Goodwin have opened up about the accident which left him paralysed. Joining host Lorraine Kelly live in the studio in their first TV interview together, the couple talked about how the incident has made their relationship stronger than ever.
Jonathan fell 30 feet between two burning cars and missed a safety airbag below when a stunt rehearsal went wrong, and spent four months in hospital as a result. He explained:
“I’m not down about it. I’m doing as well as I can be. It was pretty gnarly. It sounds very dramatic sitting here but I nearly died… I saved my life because I fell upside down, head first to the ground but I didn’t hit my head.”
He described the emotional moment he told Amanda following the horrific accident, telling her that she could end the relationship:
“I did say, you have a get out of jail free card – if you want to walk away, then I completely understand and she told me not to be so stupid and that was that.”
Amanda added:
“We are closer and tighter than ever – every day is a joy… Life’s too short – that’s what I’ve realised through all of this. Just be in the moment. He’s a total inspiration to me. He’s an idiot – but I’m a wally so it’s fine.”
The couple also talked about their upcoming wedding later this year, their seven-hour phone conversations when they started dating and how they decided to get engaged “within half an hour” of first meeting.
As well as featuring on America’s Got Talent, Jonathan had also wowed UK audiences on Britain’s Got Talent.
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV & ITV Hub
