Holmes and wife Ruth Langsford had been ‘shunted’ out of a regular presenting role on This Morning.
“I’ve spent my career on broadcasting firsts and start-ups, and GB News is one of the most exciting yet, it’s just the kind of shake-up the industry needs.” – Eamonn Holmes
Broadcaster and journalist Eamonn Holmes is joining GB News to host a morning slot from January 2022. As one of the most recognised faces and voices of British broadcasting, Eamonn joins from ITV, where he has anchored This Morning regularly for 15 years, most recently as the summer holiday host alongside wife Ruth Langsford. The pair had previously hosted every Friday edition, however were ‘shunted out’ in a ‘woke revamp’. Ruth is currently the longest surviving This Morning host having joined the show as a regular in 1999. She also is one of the rotation of presenters on ITV Daytime’s Loose Women gossip show.
Eamonn is probably best-known for his twelve years co-presenting ITV’s early morning magazine show GMTV then for eleven years hosting Sunrise at Sky News. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Eamonn has presented a vast array of programmes including game shows, panel shows, sports events, documentaries, news and current affairs, religious programmes, and children’s shows.
He is widely known as a radio host, having presented his own programmes on numerous stations including Radio 5 Live, Magic, BBC Radio 2, and talkRADIO.
Eamonn grew up in Belfast and started his journalism career at a Dublin-based business magazine before joining UTV as a reporter for Farming Ulster. By the time he was 21, he was anchoring the channel’s flagship show, Good Evening Ulster.
He is a four-time winner of awards from the Television and Radio Industries Club, including News Presenter of the Year, Satellite TV Personality of the Year, and the Legends of Industry Award for Services to Broadcasting and Journalism.
He was named Best Breakfast TV Presenter in the Radio Times awards in 2017 after a vote by more than 33,000 viewers and was appointed an OBE for services to broadcasting in the Queen’s New Year Honours in 2018.
He became a network personality when he launched in 1986 Open Air for BBC One, the show ironically eventually killed off by ITV rival This Morning when it launched in 1988. Other shows include National Lottery Live (BBC), How Do They Do That? (BBC) Head To Head (Tyne Tees) and with Ruth on Channel 5 Do The Right Thing and Eamonn and Ruth: How The Other Half Live.
“I’ve admired GB News from the beginning for its clever mix of punchy debate but delivered with warmth and even some fun. To me the greatest honour in journalism is to give a voice and respect to the unheard, and that’s exactly what GB News is all about.” – Eamonn Holmes
