On this Day 1981: Wheelchair access issues
On this Day: December 7th, 1981.
Jon Lander spends a day in a wheelchair in Birmingham for the ATV political series Left, Right and Centre.
Jon starts his report at Selly Oak railway station where he has to be lifted into the guard’s van. Once in Birmingham, we get a rare glimpse of the subterranean world at New Street station.
In the city itself, he struggles crossing roads and coping with kerbs. He also has difficulty getting into a book shop and it takes four people to get him into the Post Office on Victoria Square.
