Neighbours to revisit two old characters

Australian soap Neighbours is bringing two old faces.

Richard Huggett has reprised his role as Glen Donnelly after nearly three decades away from the soap.

The character – half-brother to Paul (Stefan Dennis) – was diagnosed with paraplegia after he took a near-fatal plunge from the roof of Lassiters. The brothers parted on extremely bad terms back in 1992.

Radio Times reports that Glen will be returning to Ramsay Street later this year, alongside his half-sister Lucy Robinson (Melissa Bell).

“Ultimately, I come back to reconnect with Lucy,” Richard told the publication “As you know when I left, Paul and I were not on the best of terms so I come back to see Lucy and it goes on from there with all sorts of twists and turns and cliffhangers – but no hanging off of hotel roofs this time.”

Speaking of how Glen might react to seeing his half-brother again, Richard said “I think it’s a bit more complicated than dislike because there is so much history there with the way Glen was treated, which was pretty bad, especially by Paul, and this is where the twists, turns and agendas come into play.”

The actor also shared some details about Glen and Lucy’s relationship, saying that the controversial romantic twist that aired between them in 1991 won’t be revisited.

“There’s nothing like that this time. Their bond is very much a brotherly sisterly one when we see them.”

Huggett further noted of his return: “Back then he was a troubled young man but he’s grown up and he’s a lot calmer now. Of course, there will be some sort of confrontation with Paul but as for how far that goes, well, who knows? We’ll see.”

Richard also addressed the fact that Glen will no longer use a wheelchair when viewers see him, despite his previous diagnosis.

“The writers have done a really good job at justifying why I’m not in a wheelchair anymore I think.”

Glen and Lucy’s returns are due to air this autumn.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
